Two large format paintings: ”The Battle of Vienna” (Bitwa pod Wiedniem) and “The Battle of Parkany” (Bitwa pod Parkanami) originating from collegiate church of St. Wawrzyniec, Żołkwa – Ukrain, will be on exhibit 20.02.2012 - 04.03.2012. The works of Martino Altomonte (1657-1745), Jan III Sobieski’s court painter, are currently the property of Lviv National Art Gallery and they present precious and unique examples of battle paintings. In comparison to other common canvases from the same period, they not only differ in artistic value but also in size – “Battle of Parkany” is a canvas of 886 x 782 cm, “Battle of Vienna” – 806 x 833 cm. The canvases were brought to Warsaw in 2008 within the framework of a project co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and  were subjected to thorough preservation and restoration. For three years a team of Polish and Ukrainian specialists, under the direction of Paweł Sadlej and Marcin Kozarzewski, worked  to restore the paintings’ original glamour. Effects of these endeavours can be admired at the Museum of Architecture for two weeks. It’s worth noting that because of the value of the works and their immense size the presentation of canvases from Żołkwa is always an organizational, logistic and technical challenge.
